"Recent" Bird Photos


This page is where I try to put photos of the birds I've seen/photographed since I've
moved to Ithaca, NY. Most of these are NOT on the "old" webpage (where I have
mostly lower quality photos) - which are from photographs I took while I was an
undergrad in Colorado. Anyway, this hopefully works for now! Enjoy!!!

Hybrid Mallard x Black Ducks I'd like some feedback on, and a common loon.

April 20, 2007: As usual, there's more to come. Here are a few more for now...
    A female Common merganser at Myers Point.
    A Dunlin at Myers Point, including some video of the bird feeding.
    A Northern Mockingbird at Myers.
    A Wild Turkey including some video of a shaking behavior I've never seen before.
    A LITTLE GULL seen in Stewart Park, 17 April 2007. Also some video of the bird in flight.
    A Wilson's Snipe at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Also some video.
    Lastly, a very cooperative Common Loon at Myers.
A number of poor quality shots of the PACIFIC LOON seen near Sheldrake Point.
A few nicer looking Red-necked Grebe photos.
The drake EURASION x AMERICAN WIGEON seen up the lake on Friday, 23 March.
Two drake Long-tailed Ducks seen just down the road from the above hybrid.
A Northern Shrike seen later that same day near Dryden Lake.

I've also put up a few photos that start to give one an idea of the number of waterfowl present at the north end of Cayuga Lake (and further North) during this time. First, a photo looking across the lake from Cayuga Lake State Park and another from the other side of the lake at Cayuga Lake State Park. Each of these show only a small percentage (<15%) of the ducks on the water at the time!!!
Lastly, a small fraction of a flock of Snow Geese at the Mucklands (part of Montezuma NWR) north of the lake.

An unusual looking juvenile Herring Gull seen around the Ithaca, NY area back in late August to early September of 2004.
Note the extensive pale pink bill, which "should" be entirely black!
Some photos of Glaucous Gulls; an odd Lesser Black-backed Gull; an Iceland Gull; Mallard - Black Duck hybrids; a Rough-legged Hawk; and an artsy Ring-billed Gull.
A few pictures from a brief trip to El Salvador in the summer of 2006. Note that
the butterfly and other non-bird photos are way better than the bird shots!
Here are a few birds seen in early January 2007 near Pueblo, CO. They include an ICELAND GULL, a GLAUCOUS GULL, yet another Merlin photo, Mountain Bluebird, American Tree Sparrow, HARRIS'S SPARROW, Great Black-backed Gull plus a couple of "odd" gulls for folks to comment on, Horned Lark, yet another horrible photo of a Mew Gull, a nice shot of a Sharp-shinned Hawk, and a bonus non-bird photo of Rich Miller along the Canyon City Riverwalk during the very snowy Penrose CBC!!

Saturday, December 9th Birds - Ithaca Area:
Hooded Mergansers, a European Starling, a male Wood Duck, a Mallard X Black Duck hybrid, a 1st winter Iceland Gull, an adult and 3rd winter Lesser Black-backed Gull, and an odd Herring-type Gull.

A Pale Eurpoean Starling seen in Ithaca - May, 2006. Other birds seen that day were my lifer Cerulean Warbler, lifer Snowy Owl, Brown-headed Cowbirds, and an Eastern Bluebird.

A early April bird seen while I was trying to photo a Bohemian Waxwing on campus.

Iceland Gull Seen in Stewart Park, December 2005.
Mallard X Black Duck Hybrid seen on Cayuga Lake near "Hog's Hole". Ithaca, NY - 12/15/05.
These photos are of the much-photographed-and-video-taped Black-tailed Gull that was found in Vermont during late October, 2005.
While the photos are horrible, here's what I have on the Black Guillemot that showed up on Cayuga Lake in late October, 2004. The McGowans managed to get much beter pictures of the bird than these!
