COE's Staff Ice Climbing Klinic (SICK)

Each year Cornell's Outdoor Education program (COE) gets permission from the Finger Lakes Land Trust
and other land ownders to hold a staff ice climbing clinic at Lickbrook just outside of Ithaca off
Rt. 13. This year we had great weather (that caused lots of melting ice!) and a good turn out which made for
a great day of climbing. In addition to the technique demos, anchor building workshops and expected amount of
ice climbing that was going on, we also demonstrated how strong ice protection can be by droping logs onto a
screw (w/ screamer) and aa V-thread - both of which held!!! Not a bad way to spend a weekend!!!
The photos here are courtesy of David Katz - thanks for the pics David!!!
[Hopefully I'll get some of the video we took of these drops on this page soon.].

Here's Nick getting focused on Lickbrook's lower falls.

Becky Selling showing off her skills.

Ben "Snuggles" Blakely helping Jamie out with the leashes on HIS tools... or as he refers to them "[his] sweet babies, [his] precious".

Katie Kimble getting the "swing" of things.

Here I am finishing up the top rope setups and preparing to rap down.

Me again, working my way up the climb.

It was almost a good swing, honest!!! :-)

Hooking my way up over a bulge at the top of the steepest part of the climb.
(I'm going to brag a little by adding that I later climbed the steep section and over
this bulge at the top sans tools... I LOVE my army surplus wool gloves!!!)

Taking the easy way back to the ground.
